Improving fire safety in new and existing buildings

New laws with the Fire Safety Regulation 2022

A year ago, The Fire Safety Working Group published recommendations to improve safety in new and occupied buildings. That work has now resulted in new laws with the Fire Safety Regulation 2022 signed off by Victor Dominello MP and published in December 2022. The Reg introduces the following reforms:

  • Changes to how performance-based design briefs are reviewed and approved by FRNSW
  • Allowing the reissuing FSSs to account for errors and omissions
  • Implementing AS1851 to ensure the performance of fire safety measures is tested consistently and rigorously
  • Requiring FSSs to be issued by an accredited practitioner
